Will iPhone 17 Pro Lens Protectors Fit the iPhone 18 Pro? LensGuard Yes, CameraGo No

Two silver iPhone 18 Pro phones side by side: on the left, three TORRAS LensGuard lens rings being set onto the camera lenses one by one; on the right, a single TORRAS CameraGo plate lifting off the whole camera module

It depends on the type. A ring-style lens protector like our LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro fits the iPhone 18 Pro, and the 17 Pro Max version fits the 18 Pro Max. A one-piece plate like our CameraGo for iPhone 17 Pro does not fit the iPhone 18 Pro, so buy the version made for your phone.

The iPhone 18 Pro looks almost identical to the iPhone 17 Pro from the back. Apple lists exactly the same height, width and depth for both phones, and the three lenses sit in the same triangle on the same plateau. So if you've just upgraded and have a spare lens protector in a drawer, or you're shopping and see listings marked "17 Pro / 18 Pro", it's a fair question whether last year's one will do or whether you need a new iPhone 18 Pro lens protector or iPhone 18 Pro Max lens protector.

It came up again and again on Reddit in the first two weeks after launch. One buyer asked whether an iPhone 17 Pro camera lens protector will fit the iPhone 18 Pro, and another asked for 18 Pro Max lens protector recommendations. Two more threads found the same problem from the case side. A PSA on r/iphone warned that some 17 Pro Max cases don't fit the 18 Pro Max because the camera plateau is taller. And an owner found that a case sold for both phones left the 18 Pro's lenses sitting above its camera lip.

We make lens protectors for both generations, so here's the straight answer for ours, and what to check for any other brand.

Key takeaways

  • LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro fits the iPhone 18 Pro, and LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro Max fits the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Each ring sits on one lens, and the lenses haven't moved.
  • CameraGo for iPhone 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max does not fit the iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max. A one-piece plate has to match the whole camera module, not just the lenses.
  • The iPhone 18 Pro's camera plateau is slightly thicker. Apple says 17 Pro cases aren't officially compatible with the 18 Pro for that reason. John Gruber measured the difference with a caliper at 0.1 mm.
  • Fit and color are different questions. iPhone 17 Pro LensGuard comes in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver. Only Silver shares a name with an iPhone 18 Pro finish.
  • Your case matters as much as the protector. A 17 Pro case on an 18 Pro has less lip to spare above the camera, and a lens protector adds height on top of that.

What changed on the iPhone 18 Pro camera?

The body didn't change, but the camera plateau got slightly thicker. Apple's own spec pages list the same outside dimensions for both phones:

iPhone 17 Pro iPhone 18 Pro Source
Height 150.0 mm 150.0 mm Apple compare
Width 71.9 mm 71.9 mm Apple compare
Depth (body, not camera) 8.75 mm 8.75 mm Apple tech specs
Weight 7.27 oz (206 g) 7.44 oz (211 g) Apple compare
Camera plateau thickness 11.4 mm 11.5 mm Daring Fireball, measured with a caliper

Apple doesn't publish the height of the camera plateau, because the depth in its spec sheet is the body without the camera. The 0.1 mm figure comes from John Gruber of Daring Fireball, who measured both phones with a digital caliper. When he asked Apple whether the 18 Pro is case-compatible with the 17 Pro, he wrote, "they are not, because the 18 Pro camera plateaus are slightly thicker this year". He also found that Apple raised the camera lip on its own 18 Pro cases by the same tenth of a millimeter. Macworld reported a bigger difference, about 0.5 mm. Either way, the camera is the part that changed.

The other big camera change is inside. The iPhone 18 Pro's main camera now has a variable aperture, a set of moving blades behind the lens cover. That doesn't change what a lens protector touches, but it's a good reason to keep the cover glass in front of it intact. We covered that in Is the iPhone 18 Pro's Variable Aperture Fragile?

Why does a LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro fit the iPhone 18 Pro?

Because each ring only has to match one lens, and the 18 Pro's lenses are where the 17 Pro's were. LensGuard is three separate rings of 9H+ glass, each cut to the contour of one lens. It doesn't touch the rest of the plateau, the flash, the microphone or the LiDAR scanner. So the plateau's outline and thickness don't matter to it. What matters is the size and position of each lens, and the LensGuard for 17 Pro seats correctly on the 18 Pro.

Size still matters. We make LensGuard separately for the Pro and the Pro Max, so a LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro Max goes on the 18 Pro Max and one for the 17 Pro goes on the 18 Pro.

Why doesn't a CameraGo for iPhone 17 Pro fit the iPhone 18 Pro?

Because a one-piece plate has to match the whole camera module, not just the lenses. CameraGo covers the module with a single metal-framed plate. It has glass over each lens and precise cutouts for the flash and microphone, and it sits on the plateau itself. A ring can ignore everything around its lens. A plate has to line up with every opening and edge at the same time, so a change a ring would never notice is enough to stop it seating properly.

Our CameraGo for iPhone 17 Pro is cut for the iPhone 17 Pro's module, and it doesn't fit the iPhone 18 Pro. The same goes for the Pro Max. So we make a separate CameraGo for each iPhone 18 Pro model, and that's the one to buy.

Buying from another brand? Use the same logic. Separate rings or single-lens covers are the most likely to carry over. A full plate or a one-piece film that covers the whole camera needs to be made for the iPhone 18 Pro specifically. Be wary of one-piece protectors listed as "17 Pro / 18 Pro" unless the brand says how it tested the fit on both.

Will an iPhone 17 Pro LensGuard match an iPhone 18 Pro's color?

It fits, but most finishes won't match. LensGuard rings have a metal rim finished to match the phone, and the two generations come in different colors:

LensGuard finishes
iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue, Silver
iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max Burgundy, Black, Glacier, Silver

Silver is the only finish name the two share, so a Silver 17 Pro LensGuard on a Silver 18 Pro is your closest match. A Cosmic Orange set on a Burgundy phone will fit and protect the lenses just as well, but it'll look like a mismatch. If you spend any time looking at the back of your phone, the iPhone 18 Pro version comes in all four 18 Pro finishes and costs the same, $23.99.

Will your lens protector still sit below your case's camera lip?

Check it, especially if you're keeping an iPhone 17 Pro case. A case protects the camera by standing a little taller than it, so a flat drop lands on the case lip and not on the lenses. The iPhone 18 Pro's thicker plateau uses up some of that height. A lens protector then adds its own layer on top, and that uses up some more.

For most cases the margin is still there. Gruber found his 17 Pro cases fit the 18 Pro perfectly. But cases with a tight camera lip are the ones to watch. The case maker Native Union told Macworld that on 17 Pro cases fitted to an 18 Pro, "some of the camera lens could be exposed to almost touching the surface". That's what the owner in the Reddit thread above found with a case sold for both phones.

Here's a 10-second check. Put the phone in its case with the lens protector on, and lay a credit card flat across the camera lip. If the card touches the protector, the lenses will take the next flat drop. You'd be better off with a case made for the iPhone 18 Pro, whose lip is taller.

Should you buy a lens protector made for the iPhone 18 Pro?

If you already own a LensGuard for 17 Pro, use it. For anything else, buy the iPhone 18 Pro version.

Choosing between the two types? LensGuard keeps the original look of the camera with a ring on each lens. CameraGo covers the whole module, including the plateau between the lenses, which suits people who go caseless or are hard on their phones. Both use 9H+ glass with a double-sided anti-reflective coating and 3M adhesive that peels off without residue. For how either one affects your photos, see Do Lens Protectors Ruin Your Photos? FAQ

Will an iPhone 17 Pro camera lens protector fit the iPhone 18 Pro?

It depends on the type. A ring-style protector that covers each lens separately, like TORRAS LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro, fits the iPhone 18 Pro, because the lenses are in the same place. A one-piece plate that covers the whole camera module, like TORRAS CameraGo for iPhone 17 Pro, does not fit the iPhone 18 Pro. Buy the iPhone 18 Pro version instead.

Does a LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro Max fit the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

Yes. TORRAS LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro Max fits the iPhone 18 Pro Max. For the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, use LensGuard for iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro, because TORRAS makes the Pro and Pro Max versions separately.

Why doesn't CameraGo for iPhone 17 Pro fit the iPhone 18 Pro?

CameraGo is a single metal-framed plate that sits on the camera plateau and has to line up with every lens, the flash, the microphone and the edge of the module at once. The iPhone 17 Pro version is cut for the iPhone 17 Pro's module and does not fit the iPhone 18 Pro. TORRAS makes a separate CameraGo for the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro camera bump bigger than the iPhone 17 Pro's?

Slightly. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro's camera plateau is thicker than the 17 Pro's and does not list 17 Pro cases as compatible. John Gruber of Daring Fireball measured 11.5 mm vs 11.4 mm with a caliper. Macworld reported a difference of about 0.5 mm. Height, width and body depth are identical.

Will an iPhone 17 Pro LensGuard match my iPhone 18 Pro's color?

Only in Silver. iPhone 17 Pro LensGuard comes in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver, while the iPhone 18 Pro comes in Burgundy, Black, Glacier and Silver. Other combinations fit and protect the lenses but will not match the phone. LensGuard for iPhone 18 Pro comes in all four iPhone 18 Pro finishes.

Can I use an iPhone 17 Pro case with a lens protector on the iPhone 18 Pro?

Often yes, but check the camera lip. The iPhone 18 Pro's camera plateau is slightly thicker, and a lens protector adds height, so a tight 17 Pro case may leave the lenses level with or above its lip. Lay a card flat across the lip: if it touches the protector, use a case made for the iPhone 18 Pro.
