Will iPhone 17 Pro Cases Fit the iPhone 18 Pro? (And Can an 18 Pro Case Go on a 17 Pro?)

Three TORRAS Ostand cases on iPhone 18 Pro models, each with an open cutout and raised lip around the camera plateau

Two weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro launched, an owner posted a warning to r/iphone: older iPhone 17 Pro Max cases that cover the camera plateau won't fit the new phone. Another owner replied that Apple's own 17 Pro silicone case wouldn't go on their 18 Pro either. Meanwhile, on r/iphone18pro, someone celebrated that all their old 17 Pro cases fit, and on r/iPhone17Pro, owners were happily putting new 18 Pro cases on their 17 Pros.

They're all right, about different cases. The two phones share a body but not a camera plateau, so whether an old case fits depends on one part of it: the camera opening. If you're deciding between reusing last year's case and buying an iPhone 18 Pro case or iPhone 18 Pro Max case, here's what changed, which kinds of cases cross over, and how to check yours.

The short answer

Most iPhone 17 Pro cases fit the iPhone 18 Pro, but cases with a tight camera cutout may not, because the 18 Pro's camera plateau is slightly taller.

  • The bodies are identical. Apple lists the same height, width and depth for the 17 Pro and 18 Pro (5.91 × 2.83 × 0.34 in, or 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm), and the same again for the two Pro Max models.
  • The camera plateau grew by about 0.1 mm. John Gruber measured 11.4 mm on the 17 Pro and 11.5 mm on the 18 Pro with a caliper. Apple told him that's why it doesn't call the cases compatible.
  • Cases with an open camera cutout usually fit. Cases that frame or cover the plateau tightly are the ones owners report won't seat, including Apple's own 17 Pro silicone case.
  • Going the other way is safer. An 18 Pro case has a little more room around the camera, so it generally fits a 17 Pro. OtterBox and Native Union both told Macworld their 18 Pro cases work on the 17 Pro.
  • Check the camera lip, not just the fit. A 17 Pro case can go on and still leave the lenses level with its lip, especially with a lens protector fitted.

Are iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro cases the same size?

The phones are the same size, so the case bodies are too; only the camera plateau differs. Apple's spec sheets list identical outer dimensions for each pair and the same set of controls: Action button, Camera Control, side button and volume buttons. The only body number that changes is weight.

Model Height Width Depth Weight
iPhone 17 Pro 5.91 in (150.0 mm) 2.83 in (71.9 mm) 0.34 in (8.75 mm) 7.27 oz (206 g)
iPhone 18 Pro 5.91 in (150.0 mm) 2.83 in (71.9 mm) 0.34 in (8.75 mm) 7.44 oz (211 g)
iPhone 17 Pro Max 6.43 in (163.4 mm) 3.07 in (78.0 mm) 0.34 in (8.75 mm) 8.22 oz (233 g)
iPhone 18 Pro Max 6.43 in (163.4 mm) 3.07 in (78.0 mm) 0.34 in (8.75 mm) 8.78 oz (249 g)

Depth is measured at the phone's body. It doesn't include the camera plateau, which is where the two generations part ways.

What changed? The camera plateau is slightly taller

The 18 Pro's camera plateau stands about a tenth of a millimeter taller than the 17 Pro's, roughly the thickness of a sheet of printer paper. In his iPhone 18 Pro review, John Gruber wrote: "I measured with a digital caliper and the difference is one-tenth of a millimeter: 11.5mm vs. 11.4mm." He added that Apple "raised the plateau guard lip on its own 18 Pro cases by one-tenth of a millimeter," and that when he asked, Apple said it does not call the two generations case-compatible, "because the 18 Pro camera plateaus are slightly thicker this year."

Not everyone agrees on the size of the change. Macworld put it at "about 0.5mm," without saying how that was measured. The caliper reading is the more specific number, but either way the plateau is taller, and only around the camera. Gruber measured an 18 Pro; we haven't found a published measurement for the Pro Max plateau, though owners report the same behavior with Pro Max cases.

A tenth of a millimeter sounds like nothing, and for most cases it is. It matters in two places: cases that grip the plateau closely, and the camera lip that's supposed to keep your lenses off the table.

Will an iPhone 17 Pro case fit the iPhone 18 Pro?

Usually yes, if the case leaves the camera plateau open; a case that frames or covers the plateau tightly may not seat. Gruber found that "17 Pro cases fit 18 Pro phones perfectly" in his testing. Owners on Reddit found exceptions, and they share one design trait.

Here's what owners reported in the r/iphone PSA thread:

  • Apple's own 17 Pro silicone case didn't fit an 18 Pro. "Original iPhone 17 pro silicone case also does not fit on the 18 pro because of the taller Camera Plateau," one owner wrote, after testing it.
  • A precise-cut 17 Pro case wouldn't fully seat. "It almost does but you cannot fully seat the top of the phone in the case," another wrote.
  • The cutout's size is the deciding factor. "All cases that dont have large enough opening for the camera plateau will not fit," a third owner summed up.
  • A 17 TechWoven case goes on, with a caveat. "It works but the camera bumps extends out a bit," one reply said. Another owner asked whether their old TechWoven case was safe to use on the 18 Pro.
  • Plenty of cases simply fit. Several owners reported their 17 Pro Max cases working on the 18 Pro Max, from slim cases to rugged ones.

Case makers split the same way. Rokform told Macworld its iPhone 17 Pro line is incompatible with the 18 Pro. Native Union said a 17 Pro case on an 18 Pro is "less optimized, as some of the camera lens could be exposed to almost touching the surface."

The camera lip is the part that’s easy to overlook. A case can slide on, look fine and still leave the lenses level with its camera lip. Then the lenses, not the lip, take the contact when the phone is put down flat on a hard table. The original PSA also warned that cases with metal around the camera cutout could scratch the new phone if they're forced over the taller plateau.

Can you use an iPhone 18 Pro case on a 17 Pro?

Generally yes: the 17 Pro's plateau is slightly lower, so an 18 Pro case has room to spare around the camera. Gruber reported 18 Pro cases fitting 17 Pro phones "perfectly." OtterBox told Macworld its 18 Pro and Pro Max cases are "also compatible with iPhone 17 Pro," and Native Union said "all our iPhone 18 Pro cases are fully compatible with the iPhone 17 Pro." On r/iPhone17Pro, an owner reported that Apple's 18 Pro cases fit their 17 Pro.

The exception is the same design trait as before. In a thread titled "Some 18P/M cases not compatible with 17P/M", an owner put the rule simply: "Anything with an open plateau is confirmed compatible." Cases with a cutout shaped tightly around the plateau depend on how exactly they were made. And because Apple doesn't publish the position of each button, a case with molded button covers is worth a test press before you commit.

Our Ostand cases are made and listed for the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. We don't list them for the 17 Pro, so if you own a 17 Pro, buy a case that names your model.

Will an iPhone 17 Pro Max case fit the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

The same rule applies: identical body, slightly taller camera, so open-cutout cases usually fit and tight ones may not. The 17 Pro Max and 18 Pro Max share 6.43 × 3.07 × 0.34 in (163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm) on Apple's spec sheets. The original warning was about Pro Max cases specifically, and an earlier r/iphone post said the same about 17 Pro cases.

Pro and Pro Max cases don't cross over in either direction. They're different sizes, so the question is only ever 17 Pro to 18 Pro, or 17 Pro Max to 18 Pro Max.

How to check if your iPhone 17 Pro case fits the 18 Pro

Put the phone in the case, then check four things: the seat, the camera lip, the buttons and the cutout edge.

  1. The seat. Press the top corners into the case. If the top edge won't sit flush, or the case bows outward near the camera, the cutout is too tight. Take it off rather than forcing it.
  2. The camera lip. Lay a credit card flat across the camera opening, edge to edge on the case's lip. If the card touches a lens or the plateau, the lip isn't doing its job. This is the same test we use in our 17 Pro to 18 Pro lens protector guide.
  3. The buttons. Press the Action button, both volume buttons and the side button through the case, and click Camera Control. Each should respond cleanly, without a mushy or double press.
  4. The cutout edge. Look at where the case meets the plateau. A hard or metal edge that rubs the taller plateau can mark its aluminum finish. A soft edge or a small gap is fine.

If any of these fail, the case is the wrong one for this phone, even if it looks right from the back.

Does a lens protector change whether a case fits?

Yes: a lens protector adds height on top of the plateau, so it can push the lenses past an old case's lip. One owner in the PSA thread had a 17 Pro Max case fitting the 18 Pro Max, but with individual lens covers that "stick up just a little bit taller than the case lip."

For lens protectors, the generation matters too. Our ring-style iPhone 18 Pro lens protector, LensGuard, has a 17 Pro version that also fits the 18 Pro; the one-piece CameraGo for the 17 Pro doesn't. The full breakdown is in our lens protector fit guide. If you're wondering why most cases leave the plateau's top face bare in the first place, we covered that in why iPhone 18 Pro cases leave the camera plateau exposed.

For screen protectors, the case question is different. A case's front lip can press on the edge of the glass, which is one reason screen protectors lift. If your glass is lifting at the edges after a case change, see why iPhone 18 Pro screen protectors lift.

Should you reuse your 17 Pro case or buy a new one?

Reuse it if it passes the four checks; buy a case made for the 18 Pro if it doesn't, or if you're adding a lens protector. A case that seats, clears the camera and presses every button cleanly is fine on the new phone. A case that only nearly fits isn't protecting the part of the phone that changed.

If you're buying new, a case listed for your exact model is designed around the taller plateau. Look for a stated camera-lip height, around 1 mm or more, if you set your phone down flat on hard surfaces or plan to add a lens protector.

FAQ

Will iPhone 17 Pro cases fit the iPhone 18 Pro?

Most do. The two phones have identical bodies, but the 18 Pro's camera plateau is about 0.1 mm taller, so cases with a tight camera cutout, including Apple's own 17 Pro silicone case according to owners, may not seat properly. Cases with an open cutout usually fit.

Will an iPhone 17 Pro Max case fit the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

The same rule applies. The 17 Pro Max and 18 Pro Max have the same height, width and depth, so open-cutout cases usually fit, while cases that frame or cover the camera plateau tightly may not.

Can I use an iPhone 18 Pro case on a 17 Pro?

Generally yes. The 17 Pro's camera plateau is slightly lower, so an 18 Pro case has room to spare. OtterBox and Native Union both say their 18 Pro cases fit the 17 Pro. Test the buttons, since Apple doesn't publish their exact positions.

Are iPhone 18 Pro and 17 Pro cases the same?

Not officially. Apple lists identical body dimensions, but it told Daring Fireball the two aren't case-compatible because the 18 Pro's camera plateau is slightly thicker, and it raised the camera lip on its own 18 Pro cases by a tenth of a millimeter.

Is it safe to use my old iPhone 17 Pro TechWoven case on the iPhone 18 Pro?

Owners report it goes on, but the camera sits slightly prouder of the case. Lay a credit card across the camera opening: if it touches a lens or the plateau, the case isn't keeping the lenses off flat surfaces, and a case made for the 18 Pro is the safer choice.

Does a lens protector affect whether my case fits?

Yes. A lens protector adds height above the plateau, so it can sit level with or above an old case's camera lip. Check with the credit-card test, and choose a case with a camera lip of around 1 mm or more if you use one.
