Why some screen protectors break fingerprint unlock
Not all protectors are created equal for ultrasonic sensors. The usual suspects:
Thick glass. Budget protectors often run 0.5 mm or more. That extra distance degrades the ultrasonic signal enough to cause misreads. Look for glass in the 0.2–0.33 mm range.
Edge-only adhesive. Some cheap curved-screen protectors only stick at the borders, leaving a micro air layer over the whole display — including the sensor zone. Ultrasound hates this. You want full-surface adhesive, so the glass is optically and acoustically bonded to the display everywhere.
Bubbles and dust over the sensor area. Even a full-adhesive protector fails if there's a bubble sitting on the fingerprint zone (lower third of the screen, center). A single dust speck can hold up a bubble that never fully squeezes out.
Thick TPU film and privacy filters. Soft films with layered construction, and especially privacy protectors with embedded louvers, are the most common cause of stubborn fingerprint failures on ultrasonic phones.
